    2016-17 Season
     
     The basketball season began on December 2nd with the Lakers hosting Put-in-Bay, Ohio is our "Battle of the Island" Great Lakes Challenge Series.  We host a game with them every 6 years and went to the Panthers home court last winter.
     
    The Lakers struggled all night with shooting and too many turnovers.  They could not get in sync and fell 47-29 to the visitors.  Christian Styburski was the only Laker in double figures with 17 points and 14 rebounds.  He also had 5 blocked shots.  Blake Booker had 19 for the Panthers. 
     
     The Saturday game saw some improvement for the Lakers as they found a little of their shooting touch.  They still could not overcome the ball handling and shooting of Blake Booker who scored 19 again for the Panthers.  A more balanced scoring effort by the Lakers helped with Aaron Riggs with 12, Christian with 12 and Nick Davis with 11.  Aaron ended with 16 rebounds and 7 steals.  The final score was 49-41 in favor of the Panthers and they will take home the "Rock" trophy for they next 5 years.
     
    The Lakers hosted the Maplewood Baptist Black Bears on 12/7 for their opening NLL contest.  The game was close in the first half with both teams showing signs of improved play.  The 3rd quarter was the difference as the Lakers were outscored by 8 and lost by the score of 54-43.  Poor shooting cost the Lakers as they missed some layups and short range shots.  Nick Davis had 12 points, Christian scored 13 with 16 rebounds and Aaron 14 points and 10 steals.  The 10 steals was a school record for the Aaron. 
     
    Game 4 of the young season had the Lakers traveling to Hannahville.  The Lakers started out strong and got the ball inside to their big man who helped them to a 20 point first quarter.  The Lakers continued strong play and finished with a 56-29 victory for their first win of the season.  Christian finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds.  Aaron Riggs scored 14 with 9 rebounds and Nick Davis had 9 rebounds along with 12 points.  Other Lakers scoring were Gabe Kromer with 4, Gabe Hepker 2, Dominic Morse 2 and Albert Mosley 2. 
     
    The Saturday game saw the Lakers come out a little flat in the first quarter and let the home team take the lead.  A little more effort in the second quarter helped them to a 5 point lead at the half.  The Lakers decided that they needed to step up their defense in the second half and held the Soaring Eagle to 5 points to take the 55-26 win.  Nick Davis had a bid night with 20 points followed by Christian with 17 and Aaron with 13 and 10 rebounds.
     
    The 6th game for the Lakers had them hosting Ojibwe.  The game was close throughout and the Lakers trailed late in the 4th quarter.  Some pressure defense and outstanding shooting by Nick Davis allowed the Lakers to survive with a 47-41 victory.  Nick finished with 32 points on the night with 10 coming in the 4th quarter.  Christian did not have his shooting touch but controlled the backboard with 22 rebounds.
     
    Saturday's game was closer than the Friday game.  The Eagles were determined to win and gave it everything they had.  The Laker scoring was balanced with Nick 12, Christian 10, Chris Riggs 8 and Aaron 7 points.  Christian also had 18 rebounds as the game came down to the wire with Ojibwe having the ball for one last try.  The defense was excellent and the visitors were not able to get a shot off and the final score had the Lakers on top 39-38! 
     
    The Lakers continued their winning ways with two victories against Grand Marais.  The Friday game was 50-38 and Saturday 53-38.  Nick Davis had 30 points in the Friday win which also saw Leon Sehoyan score his first basket in his first year playing as an eighth grader.   
     
     
     
     
     
    2015-16 Season
     
    The Lakers traveled to Put-in-Bay, Ohio for their opening weekend of basketball.  The boys lost their game on Friday 35-31.   It was a typical opening night game with nerves and turnovers showing on both teams.  Christian Styburski had 8 points and 11 rebounds while Nick Davis finished with 18 points on the night.
     
    The Saturday morning game saw the young Lakers play with much more control and confidence.  Scoring was much more balanced with Tyler Pereny 8, Nick Davis 14, Aaron Riggs 7, Christian 11 and Chris Riggs 3.  The Lakers held on for a 43-34 victory and secured the newly established "Rock" trophy to the winner of the two day games.  The folks at Put-in-Bay were great hosts for our teams this weekend!
     
    The first Northern Lights League game had the Lakers hosting the Eagles from Ojibwe.  The boys started out playing very well and held a 21-12 lead at the half.  With the whole team getting a chance to play the Lakers were still able to extend the lead in the second half to secure a 46-29 win.  Nick Davis had 14 points and Christian Styburski finished with 16.  Four other Lakers had 4 points each in the victory.
     
    Game #4 The Lakers lost a close one to Hannahville 31-30 on Friday night after staging a comeback in the second half.  They were outscored 22-12 in the first half.  Leading the Lakers were Tyler Pereny with 8 and Chris Riggs and Christian Styburski each with 7 points.   
     
    The Saturday game saw the Lakers come out flat and fall behind 18-5 after the first quarter.  They woke up in the second quarter behind three 3 point baskets by Nick Davis.  Nick finished with 14 on the night which was matched by Christian.  Gabe Kromer was the only other Laker to score with 3 free throws.  The final score was 45-33 in favor of the Soaring Eagles.
     
    Game #6 saw the Lakers host the Maplewood Baptist Black Bears.  Maplewood was too tall and strong for the Lakers and ran away with a 49-31 victory.  The Lakers were held to 10 points in the first half.  For the game Christina Styburski had 15 points and 9 rebounds as well as 4 blocked shots.  Nick Davis had 9 and Aaron Riggs 7 points and 4 assists.
     
    A non-league game before the holiday break as the Lakers hosted Owendale Gagetown.  The game was rough with numerous fouls as the Bulldogs came out on top 61-39.  Nick Davis tried to keep the Lakers in the game with his hot shooting.  He scored 27 points on the night.  Tyler had 4 assists and Chris Riggs finished with 13 rebounds.
     
    Game #8  The Lakers traveled to Kinross for their game against Maplewood Baptist.  The game was close throughout with the Lakers holding the lead until midway through the 4th quarter.  The Black Bears got hot and outscored the Lakers by 11 in the final period to take a 46-39 win.  Nick Davis had 17 and Christian Styburski 13 for the Lakers.  Chris Riggs had 9 rebounds to lead the Lakers.
     
    The long trip to Munising Baptist was just what the Lakers needed as they defeated the Bobcats 47-20 in the Friday night game.  Although the Lakers were out rebounded, they played good defense and held the Bobcats in check.  Nick had 16 and Christian 10 to lead the scoring.  Dominic Morse scored 1 and Gabe Hepker with 1 along with Aaron Riggs with 9 for the night.
     
    Game #10  The Lakers did a better job rebounding in the Saturday game.  Nick had 7 rebounds, Christian 9, Aaron 8, Tyler 7 and Gabe Kromer 6 rebounds.  Most of the scoring was by Christian as he ended up with 24 in the morning.  Nick Davis finished with 15 as the Lakers won 47-39.
     
    Ojibwe hosted the Lakers on 1/13/16 and held the Lakers with their defense in the 4th quarter to come away with a 51-40 win.  The Lakers were in a giving mood as they turned the ball over 39 times in the afternoon game.  Christian had 15 and Nick 14 points.  Aaron Riggs played a nice game with 8 steals and 9 rebounds with his 9 points.  Nick also had 9 steals and Christian 5 blocked shots. 
     
    Games 12 & 13 were games forfeited to the Lakers by Paradise when they could not field a team due to ineligible players.
     
    The Lakers hosted the Grand Marais Polar Bears on the island on Friday 1/22/16 and pulled out a 30-26 win.  The game had high energy and both teams played well.  The Lakers were able to get everyone into the game for valuable playing time.  Christian Styburski was our leading scorer with 14 points and 15 rebounds.  Nick Davis scored 8 with 8 rebounds and Aaron Riggs had 6 points and 7 steals. 
     
    The morning game was very exciting!  The Lakers were able to withstand a strong showing by the Polar Bears and manage to keep the game tied at the end of the 4th quarter.  In the overtime, the Lakers outscored Grand Marais 14-6 for the final score of 49-41.  Nick Davis finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds while Christian had 11 rebounds and 13 points as well as 4 blocked shots.  Albert Mosley had 4 points with Dominic Morse making one free throw. 
     
    The battle of the islands took place on Friday, January 29th when the Lakers traveled to Beaver Island.  The Lakers played consistent on the defensive end of the floor and held the Islanders to 26 points.  Christian Styburski scored 27 points, had 17 rebounds and a school record 12 blocked shots!  Aaron Riggs had 13 points and 4 steals to help the Lakers continue on their winning ways with the 53-26 victory.  
     
    The Saturday game started out strong for the Lakers as they held a 24-6 lead at the half. The second half saw many of the reserves get valuable playing time.  Christian again led the Lakers with 16 points and 16 rebounds.  Nick Davis had 8 and 8 rebounds along with 6 steals.  Aaron was again in double figures with 11 points as well as Gabe Hepker with 3, Trevor Pereny with 2 and Alex Henlin with 2 points.
     
    The Friday game was Homecoming for the Polar Bears and they played well.  The Lakers held a slim 2 point lead at the half with Christian Styburski accounting for 16 of our 20 points!  The Lakers extended the lead a little each quarter for the final 47-41 victory.  Christian finished with 24 while Tyler had 9 and Nick 8 points
     
    The Saturday game was very close with the Lakers holding a comfortable lead only to see it slip away in the 4th quarter.  Christian helped us get a 13 point lead after the first quarter and we still led by 18 entering the final quarter.  Grand Marais played hard and fought back with 16, 4th quarter points but the Lakers prevailed 38-35.  Christian once again led the scoring with 21 points.  Chris Riggs helped out with nine.
     
    The final home stand of the  year brought Hannahville to the island.  The Lakers were inspired on their Homecoming night and came away with a hard fought 48-45 victory.  Aaron Riggs and Nick Davis both had 10 points and Christian followed with 22 on the night including 15 rebounds.  Aaron also collected 6 steals which helped seal the victory.
     
    On Saturday the Lakers played very well and held the Soaring Eagles to 19 points in the morning game.  The Lakers had balanced scoring with Nick and Christian 11 each, Aaron had 9 and Chris and Tyler Pereny 4 each.  Our young players, Gabe Hepker and Trevor Pereny each had 2 points.  Chris Riggs had 9 rebounds and Christian 10  along with 6 blocked shots while  Aaron had 5 steals.
     
    At the NLL tournament the Lakers played Munising Baptist and won 53-27.  Even scoring with Nick at 16 and Christian with 15.  Tyler scored 8, Aaron 6 and Alex Henlin 4 points 
     
    In the second game the Lakers fell behind early and could not catch up to the home Hannahville team and lost 56-44.  Nick Davis had 19 points to lead the team.
