8th Grade Science Investigations
The team took on the challenge of deforestation. They plan on saving forests by raising money to buy and protect rainforest land. They also plan to raise awareness of recycling in the school and the community. By encouraging the recycling of paper, they will help to reduce the number of trees that need to be cut down each year.
In September and October 2010, the class collected 446 pounds (203 kg) of paper and books. The books and paper were kept out of the landfill and sent in for recycling and composting. Here is a picture of some of the paper and books.
The bake sale in October brought in $110. The money was used to adopt about two acres of rainforest land through the Nature Conservancy.
The group raffled off a dinner for two at the Grand Hotel, and a dinner for two at Horn's restaurant in order to raise additional funds for the rainforest project.
The raffle was held Friday, February 18, 2011 at the home basketball game.
An additional $200 was raised by the raffle, so a total of six acres of forest was adopted through the Nature Conservancy's adopt an acre program in 2011. Way to go!
